General Inquiries . . . . . . . . 474-4830 Adult Services: Books: Books may be borrowed for a three week period, and may be renewed twice if they are not reserved. Most materials can be renewed once, either in person, by telephone, or using iPAC on the World Wide Web. To renew items that are out on your card, from the homepage select "Search the Catalogue" and then the menu option called "Patron Information", or click here to access our catalog using iPAC. Going on holiday? . . . ask about our Extended Loan Period for vacations. If the book isn't on the shelf, you may reserve it free of charge. If we don't have it in our collection, check with our Inter-library Loan Department at the Adult Department circulation desk to request the material from another Library. It is possible to place a hold using WebPAC; please ask staff if you require assistance. Magazines: Current issues must be used in the Library; back issues may be borrowed for three weeks. There is no renewal possible for magazines. (Magazines from the past 6 months are in the Adult Dept.; for earlier issues, ask at A-V Department). Borrowing Limits and Fines:

due date fines will apply. A-V Services: A-V Collection: The A-V Collection is located downstairs in the Reference Department. Videos, DVDs, CDs, music cassettes, talking books on audiocassette and CD, and CD-ROMs can be borrowed. VHS Video and DVD: The library has children's videos, how-to, music and feature films in English and French. Videos and DVDs may be borrowed by individuals aged 13 or older, upon presentation of a current adult library card. Audio-cassettes & CDs: The library has music, self-help material, language programs and talking books in English and French. To borrow these cassettes or CDs, you must present a current library card. CD-ROMs: There is a small collection of Windows and Macintosh compatible CD-ROMs available for borrowing, following the same loan period and procedures as for audio-cassettes and CDs. AV Equipment and Other Services: Overhead projectors, slide projectors, screens, cassette players and more are available for loan. Equipment may be rented daily or paid by an annual membership fee. Institutional Memberships: In-Town Institutional Memberships cost $50.00/year and Out-of-Town Institutional Memberships cost $75.00/year. Membership entitles the institutions to free loans of AV equipment, and the use of an adult borrowing card, good throughout the library. Borrowing Limits and Fines:

Reference Department: The Reference Collection contains some 8,700 indexes, encyclopedias, business directories, dictionaries, literary guides, and atlases, as well as a large number of phone books for Canada, maps, college/university calendars, Census and Statistics Canada publications. We have back issues of magazines and newspapers, and the Nugget, Financial Post, and Maclean's magazine on microfilm. Come to the library, e-mail us at library@cityofnorthbay.ca, or phone with your questions and we will do our best to help you find the answers. There are online full text newspapers, magazines, journals, encyclopedias and fiction and non-fiction e-books for use in the library on the Public Access computers. You can also access these most of these publications from home through the library website with a valid library card and PIN number. There is FREE Internet access on ten dedicated terminals. Patrons must book their one-hour session in advance because of heavy demand. Staff will assist patrons who are new-comers to the information highway. Children's Services: The Children's Department contains materials to encourage children to read and satisfy their curiosity and need for knowledge about the world around them; materials are suitable for youngsters from toddler age through to the teenager. The collection includes books in English and French, as well as encyclopedias, paperbacks, magazines, pamphlets, pictures, cassettes, talking books, large-print books and multilingual books. Children may borrow up to 10 items on their own cards; non-fiction (project related) materials are limited to 2 per subject per card. There are 2 Internet terminals available free of charge for one hour a day, after a permission slip is signed by a parent or guardian. Services include pre-school storytimes, toddler programs, class visits, group tours, summer programs and special events. There are two public access internet stations in the department. due date fines will apply. French Services: The French language department as an extensive collection of over 24,000 volumes in both the Adult and Children's sections. In addition, the library receives over 30 French language newspapers and periodicals. Also located on the Mezzanine level is the Joan Duquette Room, the Library of the Nipissing District Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society. More than 1,000 items, both print and microform, are available for research by members and non-members. Specialized Services: Shut-In Service: The library provides a shut-in service to those who are housebound due to age, illness, infirmity, or accident. We will deliver books and talking books tailored to your individual tastes, to your home at no charge. Please call 474-4830 for more information. Programmes: The Children's, French, Reference/AV and Adult Departments offer programmes throughout the year. Please check the bulletin boards and the local newspaper or phone for details. Services to the Physically Challenged: The Library has a large collection of large print books and CNIB talking books. There are audio-cassette tape players which can be borrowed, thanks to a donation from the North Bay Rotary Club. There is also an elevator available for disabled persons as well as wheelchair access at both entrances. The library is a partner with CNIB and has access to all CNIB services on behalf of library patrons. The Justice Lunney Special Needs Room provides computer access to people with a print handicap or visual impairment. Please call 474-3332 for more information. Bookdrop and Videodrop: You may return books and magazines in the Bookdrop. Videos, DVDs, audio-cassettes and CDs can be returned through the Videodrop (beside the Bookdrop) at the Worthington Street entrance when the library is closed. All audio-visual equipment i.e., overhead projectors must be returned in person to the Audio-Visual Department. Dionne Quintuplets Digital Collection: The archival web site dedicated to the Dionne Quintuplets was launched Tuesday October 28, 1997 at the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce Dionne Quints Museum. Included on the web site are digital copies of: Original Quints artifacts, Magazine articles, Photographs, Newspaper clippings from museum collections in the Nipissing area. The site contains over 3000 images. The digitized images are displayed under broad subject headings, in a browsable format. Phase two involved cataloguing and indexing each digitized image using metatags, and translation into French. To view this fun and informative archival site through the North Bay Public Library's web site, click here. Please note, the site is not being updated, so more recent news articles about the surviving Dionne sisters (after 1997) will not be found here. Web site partners are: The Callander Bay Heritage Museum, The Callander Public Library, The City of North Bay, The North Bay Area Museum, The North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce (owners of the Dionne Quints Museum), The North Bay Public Library. This digitization project was funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture, and Recreation, Cultural Partnerships Branch, through a Digital Content Creation grant. Additional support for a summer student was received from the Industry Canada SchoolNet Digitization fund. E-Resources: Library members can access fulltext databases for magazine and newspaper articles, research findings, public domain e-books and government reports through our web site. Canadian Almanac
The Canadian Almanac & Directory is the only resource you will need when you require facts and figures about Canada. This robust database gives you access to statistics, images and over 45,000 names and addresses for everything from Airlines to Zoos - updated every year. Each category is a gold-mine of information, providing robust information on business and finance, communications, government, associations, arts and culture (museums, zoos, libraries, etc.), health, transportation, law, education, and more. Government information includes federal, provincial and territorial - and includes an easy-to-use quick index to find key information. A separate Municipal Government section includes every municipality in Canada, with full profiles of Canada's largest urban centres. World Book Advanced Reference Suite
World Book Online enhances the print version with articles from newspapers and periodicals, web sites, videos and audio clips, maps and tables, 3-dimensional views, citation help, and many special features
Public Internet Access: The library has offered internet access to the public since 1996, with assistance from a variety of community partners including the Rotary Club, IBM, Ontelcom, Redpath McIntosh Engineering Ltd., and the City of North Bay. There are currently 12 terminals available in the library, which can be booked in advance by calling 474-3332. In addition, the library is an Urban CAP (Community Access Program) demonstration site. Through this program, free public internet access is offered at 7 popular sites around the city. Anyone can use the sites for one hour a day, at no charge, except for printing, which costs 25 cents per page. For more information about internet sites around town, see the Blue Sky Region Portal. Here you will find over 9000 records about businesses, government services, clubs, associations, social services and educational facilities in the Blue Sky Region. Partners include: Industry Canada, HRDC, Ontario Ministry of Northern Development & Mines, City of North Bay, District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, Near North Community Care Access Centre (NNCCAC), Blue Sky Region Community Network, Community Research Institute, community groups and agencies. The sites are: Best Western Hotel, Cassellholme Home for the Aged, North Bay and District Association for Community Living, North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, and Yes!
