Age Friendly Community

The City of North Bay, in partnership with the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has embarked on an exciting project to develop an Age-Friendly Community Action Plan for the City.  An Age-Friendly Committee has been established to guide the project through the process and is now looking to the community’s valuable input.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an “age-friendly community encourages active aging by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.”  Age-friendly communities are assessed by the WHO’s 8 community dimensions which include: housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support and health services, outdoor spaces and buildings, and transportation.

To date, the Age-Friendly Committee members have participated in a Visioning Workshop and a Community Audit has been undertaken. Now we need to hear from you - the residents.  Please share your thoughts and ideas for making North Bay an Age-Friendly Community by completing the Age-Friendly survey which is available on the City’s website (  Hard copies are also available at City Hall, Health Unit, and Chamber of Commerce.

The survey closes on May 11.

The Age-Friendly Committee will also be hosting a Seniors’ Expo on June 11 from 9 am to 3 pm at the North Bay Golden Age Club. There will be presentations, demonstrations, exhibitors and door prizes.  This will be a free event for all ages.  Mark your calendar and bring your families, friends, and caregivers. You don’t want to miss it.  Hope to see everyone there!

The project is funded by the Government of Ontario.
