Using North Bay Transit Services

Transit Stops:

In cases where a bus stop or Para-bus stop is temporarily inaccessible or where a temporary barrier exists, people with disabilities will be able to board or exit the bus at the closest available safe location. In determining where a safe location is located, the operator will consider the preference of the person with a disability; however the final determination of the safe location is determined by the operator, given their responsibility for the safe delivery of transit service. In these instances, operators will promptly report the inaccessible stop to their on-duty transit Supervisor.

Boarding and Alighting the Bus:

Upon request, operators will provide assistance (to the best of their ability) with boarding and exiting the bus, to people with disabilities. Transit operators should not be lifting individuals, strollers or large items. Persons needing such assistance should be traveling with a support person. Support persons may travel at no cost if they are assisting an individual with a disability and the individual has an attendant’s card, which is available from North Bay Transit.

Operators should always provide sufficient time for those who are unsteady on their feet to get safely to a seat and while getting off the bus. Upon request, transit operators will assist the safe and careful storage of mobility aids used by persons with disabilities.

People using oxygen are welcome on North Bay Transit buses.

Storage of assistive devices/mobility aids/strollers:

Where room is available and safe storage is possible, transit operators will ensure assistive devices/mobility aids are safely stored and secured within the bus.

Walkers, canes, strollers, etc. should never obstruct the free flow or safety of other passengers in the aisle or entrance/exit area of buses.

All newer buses have at least two seats that fold up. This area can be used by passengers traveling with strollers.

The bus operator will fold and unfold these seats as required. However, should this seating area be marked as Priority Seating and a passenger with a disability boards the bus, they will be given priority for this space.

In an emergency, North Bay Transit’s priorities are:

  2. Preserve Property,
  3. Maintain

For Public Information Purposes – Duties of North Bay Transit Operators:

  • Operators will remain calm, stay patient and be prepared to make key decisions as quickly as
  • Operators will activate 4-way flashers of the
  • Operators will determine what emergency action is safest and then implement it: shelter-in-place, relocation, or

Operators will inform the Supervisor and/or Dispatch of the emergency they have:

  1. Tell them if an evacuation is in progress
  2. Advise them of the nature of the emergency
  3. Their location
  4. Their route number
  • Operators will bring the bus to a complete stop in a safe and open
  • Operators will tell the passengers to remain calm and also stay seated until bus comes to a complete
  • Operators will secure the bus by applying the Spring Brake and place the transmission in
  • Operators will open all
  • Operators will kneel the bus if this feature is
  • Operators will remove their seat
  • Operators will not use wheelchair ramp (too time consuming during an emergency).
  • Operators will turn off the bus
  • If evacuation is necessary, operators will ask passengers to disembark, leaving large packages, strollers, or Operators will consider various factors including evacuation route, any smoke or traffic, timing, special considerations required for elderly and/or customers with disabilities, and preferable exits to evacuate customers from the vehicle.
  • Operators will assist customers with elderly and/or mental health conditions as well as the young and elderly, who may have difficulty following directions and/or evacuation
  • If required, operators will use a fire extinguisher only if the situation allows and is safe to do

For Public Information Purposes – Responsibilities of Passengers:

  • Passengers will remain calm, stay patient and be prepared to evacuate the vehicle if directed by the operator or emergency
  • Passengers will follow the direction of the transit operator, transit supervisors and emergency
  • If passengers are evacuated from the bus to a safe location, passengers are expected to remain at that safe location until directed otherwise by transit supervisors or emergency response
