Memorial Drive Reopens as Lake levels Fall

North Bay, ON – June 19, 2019 – Memorial Drive has been reopened to traffic following the removal today of auxiliary pumps from the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The pumps, along with temporary piping, were brought in several weeks ago to assist in the discharge of fully treated wastewater due to operational challenges caused by high water levels on Lake Nipissing. The Plant typically relies on gravity flow for the discharge of treated effluent. The pumps were used at times when water levels were too high to assist the plant in operating as it normally would. The situation has since improved with the lake level falling to 196.31 meters, down from more than 196.50 meters earlier this month.

City Scaling Down on Staffing at Sandbag Stations

North Bay, ON – June 6, 2019 – The City of North Bay is scaling back on staffing at its satellite sandbag stations due to decreased demand. The satellite location at Sunset Park at the end of Sunset Boulevard will no longer be staffed after 8 p.m. tonight, while the site at Champlain Park at the end of Premier Road will continue to be staffed until Friday at 8 p.m. Sand and sandbags will continue to be made available to residents for the purpose of protecting their properties at Public Works on Franklin Street. Notice of Pedestrian Traffic and Parking Lot Interruption

The pedestrian pathway adjacent to Marina Point will be closed between April 1, 2019 and June 6, 2019 while a trunk sanitary sewer is relocated. Garson Pipe Contractors Ltd, the contractor for Autumnwood Mature Lifestyles Community, is relocating the trunk sanitary sewer along the pathway to accommodate the Marina Point expansion project now underway. During the sewer installation the recreational path will be closed, removed and relocated to a new alignment. Additionally, a portion of parking lot No. 2 adjacent to the North Bay Museum will be occupied by the Contractor to facilitate the installation of the trunk sanitary sewer.

Memorial Gardens Update

Late Thursday afternoon some drywall cracking occurring in the bulkheads constructed slightly below the underside of the roof structure over the upper level suites was noticed during regular maintenance in the Memorial Gardens.  Due to the amount of snow that has been received and accumulated on the roof this winter it was determined to engage a structural engineer.

Some cracks have developed in the drywall on some non-bearing walls of Memorial Gardens.  Until the cause of the cracks can be confirmed it has been decided to close the facility to public use. West Ferris Arena Closed Until Further Notice

In recent sampling of the brine solution contained in the chiller unit at the West Ferris Arena, ammonia was detected.  Since that time increased sampling frequency was initiated. The last sample analyzed had an increase of ammonia in the brine solution. Sampling and routine monitoring of the chiller unit has been in effect as well as consultations with the service contractor.  Discussions with the equipment and service contractor and the City’s resources have been ongoing. In an abundance of caution, it has been decided that in the interests of the health and safety of our citizens and staff that the West Ferris Arena be shut down. Councillor Johanne Brousseau, Chair of Community Services, advises “that the City is working with our user groups to make accommodations to minimize inconveniences.” The length of the shutdown will be determined early next week. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Due to the large accumulation of snow forecast for the next few days, along with strong winds, the City will be enforcing section 3.3(3) of the On-Street Parking By-law 2014-37 by removing vehicles that are parked on residential streets within 24 hours of a snowfall. Removals will be done anywhere snow plows cannot properly clear streets during the daytime hours over the next few days. As per normal overnight restriction, no vehicles will be allowed to park on any street during the nighttime hours and are subject to ticketing and/or towing.

Aged and Damaged Trees Removed On Memorial Drive

The City of North Bay Parks Department has removed three willow trees along Memorial Drive at Regina Street. These trees had reached the end of their life span and had suffered significant damage during the recent wind storms. They became a safety risk with their proximity to the lakefront walking path. Suitable replacement trees will be planted in the spring of 2019.The interlocking brick pathway located in the same area along Memorial Drive is currently being straightened out where it was detoured around the willow trees. This work is expected to take place between the dates of October 17-26 (weather dependent).

Beginning Tuesday May 22nd, the traffic on the Trout Lake Road Overpass will be reduced to two (2) lanes of traffic (one lane in each direction) and eastbound traffic will be directed to the north side of the bridge as the south side will be closed to complete the installation of the waterproofing system. Pedestrians will also be directed to use the sidewalk on the north side of Trout Lake Road. All four (4) lanes will be re-opened to traffic by the following week, weather permitting.

Lakeshore Drive Overpass Lane Reduction

Beginning Monday May 14th (weather permitting), one lane of traffic will be closed on the Lakeshore Drive Overpass as the contractor has returned to complete the outstanding works on the bridge. The lane closure will take place on one side of the bridge and once completed, the lane will be re-opened and the same will take place on the other side of the bridge. These lane closures are only temporary and will be fully re-opened at the end of each day. Traffic interruptions are to be expected at the overpass for the duration of this work and further announcements will be provided if any significant changes to traffic are being proposed.

The City of North Bay would like to remind the public that the Kate Pace Way multi-use pathway that runs beneath the Lakeshore Drive Overpass will remain closed to permit completion of the outstanding works. Users are encouraged to follow the provided detour crossing Lakeshore Drive at Judge Avenue and down Memorial Avenue which will guide users back onto the Kate Pace Way near the Lee Park Entrance. Re-opening of the Kate Pace Way is anticipated in June.

The City of North Bay would like to caution the public about upcoming traffic and pedestrian delays along the Trout Lake Road overpass. On Wednesday, July 19 between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m. motorists and pedestrians can expect delays along the overpass due to the required jacking of the bridge deck for substructure repairs. Traffic is expected to be delayed up to 10 minutes per occurrence. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to use an alternate route during this time to avoid a delay.

Rehabilitation of the Trout Lake Road Overpass project has been awarded to Miller Paving Limited which works are currently in progress. Due to the nature of the work, traffic will be reduced to two lanes on the overpass (one lane in each direction) for the duration of the project which is scheduled for completion November 2017. This transition will take place early next week and therefore delays and interruptions to traffic are to be expected.
