One hour of free, on-street parking proposed for the Downtown
The City of North Bay is planning to introduce several new initiatives designed to make parking in the Downtown more convenient and to encourage more people to live in the core of the city.
Supported by the 2020 operating budget, the proposed changes include one hour of free, on-street parking at all pay-and-display areas in the downtown and an end to paid parking at 4:30 pm instead of 6 pm.
Quarterly parking permit fees in the Lot 4 parking garage would be reduced and overnight parking fees would be eliminated for levels one to four, with space available at no charge on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis between 4:30 pm and 8 am. In addition, those who live within the boundaries of Downtown Improvement Area would receive a 50-per-cent discount on parking permits.
Bylaw amendments to enact user fee changes to allow the new initiatives to move forward were discussed Monday during a public meeting. The amendments will now go before council for approval on Jan.14. If approved, the parking initiatives will be implemented on Feb.1.
