What is a bike box?
A bike box is a designated area at the head of a traffic lane at a signalized intersection that provides cyclists with a safe and visible way to get ahead of queuing traffic during a red-light signal. Bike boxes are identifiable to drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians by a green road marking. Bike boxes increasing visibility of cyclists and help both cyclists and drivers to share the road.
How do bike boxes work?
On a red light:
- cars stop behind the white line
- bicycles move into the green box from the bike lane/multi-use trail
- bicycles proceeeding straight wait in the centre of the green box
- bicycles turning right do so when it is safe
On a green light:
- Bicycles go first
- Right turning cars, check for bicycles before turning
Where are bike boxes located?
In 2021, the City of North Bay will be installing its first bike box at the intersection of Main Street West, Memorial Drive and Murray Street as part of the West Link Project. Read the news release here.
